Dear Journal,

Recently, my family and I made the long, arduous journey of moving out West because my father lost his job and we are short on money. Before we left, we purchased a wagon, some food, and two tents (One for my parents and one for my sister and I) and brought $15 with us to build a home. Then we began our trek. We travelled all the way across the United States, passing places such as Albany, Charleston, Nashville, and Houston until we arrived east of Placerville. All of this traveling took around nine or ten weeks! When we found a spot that looked good for building a house, we began by gathering strips of grass with thick roots and earth attached. From there, we simply attached them together an waited for them to harden. The whole operation took lots of time, a couple of days, but it only costed about eight dollars! For a house, that's pretty cheap. There is a town nearby, about a mile-and-a-half. Now I am laying in my bed in our soddie, making sure I don't get bitten by a rattlesnake. In the morning, my dad says that we will have to start plowing the fields! This is not going to be an easy task, considering the work that is required. I hope that I do not get too tired...
